Whenever a major awards ceremony draws close, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to honor unsung work and fill the hearts of fans with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. So would strategy board titles, this being someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I possess a compelling case for why my demand stands as crucial above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Organizing Gaming Categories
Organizing artistic expressions isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, showing incredible range it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these classifications successfully include numerous genres, and you can find room for most games within them.
Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Examine these examples from outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
Numerous examples exist outstanding logic titles published annually lacking appropriate categories at major award shows, except when they manage to fit classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated for anything during that awards season
- Another imaginative release missed out during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
- Just some puzzle games managed to sneak into independent or mobile categories
Value of Brain-Teasers
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for many years.
The iconic tile-matching title challenges popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with almost every other genre.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude numerous deserving experiences.
To emphasize again, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they warrant appreciation. We shouldn't delay generations.
